Drum Corps

The Drum Corps had its early beginnings back in 1957 when it performed with the South Australian Police Band (as it was then known) at Wudinna. In those days and as was the case in the early 60's, it comprised of six side, two tenor, one bass drum and cymbals. The two lead side drums, bass drum and cymbals were played by members of the percussion section, whilst the remainder tenor and side drums was made up by cadets who were attached to the band at the time.

The style and drill used by the corps during this period was predominantly that used by the British army and in particular the Royal Marines.

During the 70's and later the 80's its format was basically four side, one bass, one cymbal player and remained so until the band left for its overseas tour to Edinburgh Scotland in 1990.

After the band's return from overseas the Police Display Drum Corps was formed. Its style of playing draws on both British and American Military styles of drumming, whilst the musical colour is provided by the combination of bass drum, tenor drum, cymbals and side drum interacting with one another.

Quad drums were introduced when the Band toured Perth in 1997 further extending its capabilities. The stick drill and, at times, unorthodox movements of the Corps add to the spontaneity of the performance.

The Police Display Drum Corps first performed during the May 1991 Gala Concert in the Festival Theatre. Whilst some of its performers are members of the original Drum Corps and Percussion Section, other musicians from within the band have elected to take part in its performance, once again demonstrating the many talents which exist within the band.
