School Beat Bands

The Band of SAPOL has two School Beat Bands whose function is to entertain and educate young people from child care centres to senior primary.

Performances are FREE and last approximately for the duration of one standard classroom lesson.  Generally performances occur on a Thursday morning or afternoon, and we have two groups that operate at the same time.

Bookings can be made by emailing our SBB Coordinator Paul Drayson, or Contacting him by phone on (08) 8207 4162

Each of these bands is comprised of 8 members with the following instrumentation

Flute/Piccolo or Oboe

Clarinet

Tenor Saxophone

Trumpet

French Horn

Trombone

Tuba

and Percussion

The bands repertoire consists of TV and popular themes aimed at the younger generation.

The concept of these groups was initiated by a now retired member of the band Ian Drinkwater. He began a one man show at kindergartens educating children about police and demonstrating how musical instruments worked. Over the years he expanded the instrumentation into what it is today.

Combined, the School Beat Bands perform over 100 engagements each year.

In 2001, one of the Band's members Ross Nicholson was instrumental in producing an SBB Booklet, highlighting the information presented to school students through the Band's presentations.  The book featured police related information, and interactive activities that students could perform to help them retain what is taught to them in the short performance.

The 2001 booklet is available here to be downloaded, and a new revision is currently being produced.
